Program Palooza

Program Palooza: 60 Programs in 60 Minutes!

In 2011 the library had 22,000 programs with an attendance of 450,000, with 54 programs per branch.
All staff can lead programs. Volunteers conduct programs, also. The focus is on the customers and outcomes. What are the customers’ interests?
Seek assistance from targeted partnerships and the Friends of the Library. Program kits were developed at a cost of about $500-$550. They incorporated all ages. The library does a signature event every year—a community event or at the branch.
Programs include:
Ø      Health and Fitness: yoga; jump roping; health presentations
Ø      Parent Education classes: include court ordered classes. Provide concurrent programs for children.
Ø      Home Clinics: presentations and 1:1 counseling to those facing foreclosure or have been through it. Free Homeowners counseling.
Ø      Peer Support for Entrepreneurs
Ø      Professional Study Group
Ø      Prom Dress Exchange
Ø      Group Summer Reading. This program is in addition to the traditional summer reading that takes place at the library. In this program, the group gets a package to conduct summer reading at their site. Included groups were summer schools, Y’s, and Goys and Girls clubs
Ø      Altruistic Reading—read for a reason
Ø      Civic Engagement—including immigration and gay rights issues
Ø      Family & Intergenerational programs: Stroller Shimmy and Sweat
Ø      Letter Writing and Email
Ø      Rock Band Tournament
Ø      Jingle Bell Rock Band Tournament
Ø      Dog Day Fashion Show and Parade
Ø      Edible Book Contest—might use age categories
Ø      All County Chess Tournament
Ø      Family Game Day during National Game Month in November or offer it every month. Use physical games, also.
Ø      Mother & Grandparent Tea
Ø      Poetry Slams & Contests—use categories for different age groups
Ø      Out of School Time—Cursive Club—children practice writing by making cards for local hospital patients.
Ø      Fairy Tea Party
Ø      Read a Book, Write a Book—every week participants read a book, pick key vocabulary, and draw pictures
Ø      Story Crafters—Read a story & do a related craft
Ø      Community Show & Tell
Ø      Love on a Leash—reading with dogs.
Ø      Lego & Play dough clubs
Ø      Toastmasters Public Speaking Series Toastmasters has a curriculum for teaching to teens.
Ø      History Day Projects
Ø      Tween Club—a Tween Advisory Group
Ø      Conversation Cafes—books and coffee or coffee and conversation
Ø      Cook-Offs—include fire station, teachers, grandmothers, etc. Library customers vote.
Ø      Salsa Slam
Ø      Writing Groups—http://www.nanowrimo.org/ Every November. Includes a free Library Program Packet.
Ø      Cooking Demos and Tastings
Ø      PBS Masterpiece Theater Movie Series. Libraries can show these movies free of charge as long as they are the educational version.
Ø      Teddy Bear Tea Party
Ø      Toddler Dance Party
Ø      New Neighbor Storytime
Ø      Baby Yoga or Sign Language
Ø      Dia de los Ninos, Dia de los Libros
Ø      Daddy & Me Storytime
Ø      Teen Programs: Iron Chef Dessert; Amazing Race; Project Runaway/ County’s Best Handy Person; Pennies for Peace service project; Lock-In (8-3 is Nationwide Teen Library Lock-In Day. Connect with teens online that night. Have a virtual author visit. The theme this year is zombies. For more information go to the California Library Association page and link to Nationwide Teen Library Lock-In.); Paranormal Valentine’s Day; Hunger games Program; Zombies Program; Battle of the Bands. With teens capitalize on what’s hot.
Ø      Science Lab @ the Library. Invite a local scientist from the community or schools.
Ø      Art/Photo Gallery
Ø      Digital Photo Class
Ø      Passive Programs: holiday mail for military/ local elderly; Wall of Honor Celebrity Vets (Ask for a star at the desk, write the name on it and tack it to the wall.); Why I Love My Library—post its on the wall; Spot the Rabbit—find him in the library, tell a staff member and get a sticker. Move the rabbit every day. (This was for Chinese New Year—Year of the Rabbit.); Library Birthday Club—put your name on the bulletin board and get a sticker; themed word searches, crossword puzzles; blood pressure kits and senior resource stations; Faces, Places, & Pets Library Card Photos—post pictures.
Ø      Dinner & a Movie—ask restaurants to donate
Ø      Candy of a Certain Decade
Ø      Jigsaw Puzzle Tournament
Ø      After School Puzzle Club
Ø      Anti Valentine’s Day Program
Ø      Shrunken Heads (from raw cookie dough)
Ø      Stuffed Animal Pet Show
Ø      Hobbit Birthday Party
Ø      Big Stuck Day—find someone who will let children go through their stuck
Ø      Drop in Stitchers
Ø      Crafters Night Out
Ø      Partner with businesses in the community so that when patrons show their library card at that business, they receive a prize.
Ø      Black History Month—Black Gospel Music Experience. Invite local choirs.
Ø      Healthy Food Program
Ø      Mardi Gras Program—check out a book and receive beads
Ø      Zombie Tag
Ø      Math Club
Ø      Star Walk
