Handling censorship issues:

Programming using graphic novels:

Graphic novels have the ability to engage and attract reluctant readers. They cover every topic and genre. Market graphic novels to the schools by using visual book talks. Scan and project images. Talk about graphic novels to history, science, current events and art classes. Peruse the Internet for information on artistic styles that can be discussed with the art classes.

Matt Phelan described the process of creating a graphic novel. He has illustrated picture books and his first graphic novel, A Storm in the Barn, received the 2010 Scott O’Dell Award and was named a notable book by ALA.  Read about it at http://www.mattphelan.com/sitbabout.html. He noted that there are three principles to writing a graphic novel—tone, clarity, and economy. The tone sets the overall feeling.

Use graphic novels to create fun activities:
  • Book clubs. There are a variety of way to conduct book clubs. Everyone can read the same book or the group can pick a theme and read different books, or each participant can read his own book. Plan activities and snacks to go with the book(s). Use movie tie-ins. But show an episode, not the whole movie.
  • Graphic novel themed party. Ideas include: V for Vendetta, Super Heroes; Waling Dead—Zombies
  • Invite a graphic novel author to conduct a hands on workshop.
  • Superhero storytime for younger children presented by teens.
  • New Years Party (Japanese Culture Night)
  • 100 Ghost Stories “Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai”
  • Fan Clubs
  • Interactive gaming
  • Fan art/art jams
  • Anime/Manga group discussions
  • Teen comics/zines. Teens create and publish their own work.

When confronted with complaints about graphic novels, keep the answers simple, clear, and nonaggressive.

Svetlana Chmakova spoke about her work, which includes two series, Dramacon and Night School.
